Make “english” Usa’s Official Language? What Do You Think?
As reported on American Family Association www.afa.net

Help make English our official language
A common language, not “diversity,” makes our country stronger
Recently, the mayor of Nashville vetoed a bill that would have made English the city’s official language. He called the measure “unconstitutional, unnecessary, and mean-spirited.” U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid even called a bill to make English our official language “racist.”
It is time for liberal members of Congress to quit playing politics with the future of all children –U.S. and Immigrant–and follow the lead of 28 states which have made English their official language. Failure for Congress to act will establish a major obstacle for immigrant children as they try to move up in our society.

Good idea.
I support it.

No. English is a vestige of colonial europe and unfit to serve officially as the language of a poly cultural swamp like the USA.

Consider a common language an advantage the US will have over the EU. It is also very expensive to train government workers to speak Spanish. If I wanted to move to France and get a job I would learn French, even if English is widely spoken.

I thought English was recently established by Congress as the official language of the U.S.A. The mayor of Nashville needs to get with it! There were a few good points made…the fact that in an emergency situation it could mean the diff between life & death…
I adamantly think English should be officially esatblished as the “official” language of the U.S. I think it should be a requirement for ALL immigrants to learn English.

If you can’t speak english they shouldn’t be here.

It’s more Jingoistic bullshit!
Our nation is one of DIV-ER-SI-TY!
Not one of “one voice, one language, one party” crap.
Most of our countrymen don’t even have a full GRASP of the English language! Even our own President is a classic example of such ignorance! How in the hell is making it “official” language going to make them even more so intelligent and smarter?
It’s not!
Those 28 states don’t even know–or don’t even CARE–about the rights of their citizens. It’s just politics to them, and to groups of the right movement who just want to marginalize our nation even further through staunch racial intolerance.

If Americans weren’t so stupid, they would learn Spanish and then it wouldn’t be a problem and they could be the winners because they could speak 2 languages.
American English is really sort of stupid because Americans can only use one tense, the Present, where Spanish has 16 tenses and you can really express your thoughts.

unnecessary we have a cohesive culture. The whole idea is just designed to encourage immigrants to do what they already have enough economic and social incentive to do on their own. Plus I know they will find some reason why we “tax payers” need to spend more money to get it done.

When you have many peoples speaking many languages it makes the country weaker as a whole. In emergency situations time is lost trying to translate what people are saying. Also, when people only speak their native tongue they don’t assimilate. For example when one comes from Mexico and only speaks Spanish, they don’t consider themselves Americans. They are Mexicans living in America.
Also, it is much more expensive for the government to produce documents in every possible language. The government should only have to deal in one language.
Failure of others to assimilate into the American “Hamburger and Apple Pie society” creates a Balkanization of the USA; with little groups of similar peoples living in areas each hating other groups…..

Here’s my personal opinion:
What’s England’s official language?
What’s China’s official language?
What’s Mexico’s official language?
I know that we are considered the “land of opportunity” and what not, but everyone who’s here wants to be an “American.” If that’s the case, then they should live the true American lifestyle: speak English. This is the only place I’ve been that they make exceptions for languages and Mexicans walk around refusing to speak English and force us to try to understand what they’re saying… then they get pissed when I don’t know Spanish! WTF?!
Anyway, I think that if the nation had an official language and didn’t compromise its integrity by using these sub-par language standards, then things would be easier for everyone here. That’s just me though.
The sad truth, however, is that no matter what the official language is, it won’t matter because there are always going to be immigrants from Japan, China, Cuba, Mexico that come here and refuse to learn English. It sucks. But what can you do? Making English our official language is nice, but it won’t solve any problems.

Bit late on this. English has been the official language of the United States since about 1805. There was an arguement at the time as to whether or not the language used in government would be English or German. English was finally settled on after extensive debate and compromise. An official language only states that government statues and policies are set and debated officially in that particular language. In Europe it is often referred to as the Court Language. As English is the basic language of government, the various translations and related matters are a matter of courtesy for immigrants. Somehow over the course of time and as a result of court actions, this courtesy has gained the force of law. Now we are stuck with this unless we are able to get a Constitutional amendment specifying that all official documents and actions would be in English. Not likely to happen. I would support it if it really was able to take off, but with the lobbies for the immigrants, ACLU and other related groups and the money that they are able to bear makes this not likely to occur.

I would agree if they make exemption for native languages. Native AMericans are protesting in Oklahoma over English only laws, and their culture predates ours.

Sorry people, I’ll speak as I please. I wanna speak English, I will. I wanna speak Tex-Mex, I will. I wanna speak Arabian, Japanese, Korean, I will. And when I feel like you deserve it, I’ll cuss you and your family tree in every language to get the sheer pleasure knowing that you don’t understand a word I say because you want to make a single language “official.” Enjoy.
